Mozambique’s Energy Fund (FUNAE) has presented a USD-500-million (EUR 417.6m) electrification programme focused on hydro and solar energy, the government announced recently.

Hydropower capacity and mini-grids will bring electricity to 332 villages throughout the country, while the plan also includes 343 solar power projects.

The locations are being selected based on the availability of solar and water resources, as well as a combination of the two. The government wants to ensure that within a 15-year period, the Mozambican population has access to electricity with systems outside of the National Network.

More than 3.7 million Mozambicans have access to power thanks to off-grid solar systems that were deployed from 2005 to 2014, the government noted.
