MPower to deliver 5.6-MWh battery system in Cook Islands

MPower, a subsidiary of Australian power sector investor Tag Pacific Ltd (ASX:TAG), has won a contract to design and install a 5.6-MWh battery energy storage system in Rarotonga, the capital of the Cook Islands.

The NZD-4.3-million (USD 3m/EUR 2.7m) lithium-ion storage system will be located at the 1-MW Te Mana Ra solar array and will help further reduce the Pacific nation's reliance on diesel, MPower said on Friday. The project, supported by financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), EU and Global Environmental Fund, is a key element of the government of the Cook Islands' Renewable Energy Sector Project, according to the announcement.

Once the system is completed, which is targeted for the first half of 2018, it will be one of the largest solar energy storage systems in the Pacific, the Australian firm said.
