Myanmar opens bids for 1 GW of solar PV capacity

Myanmar has opened a tender for the procurement of 1.06 GW of ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity from independent power producers (IPPs).

The invitation to bid was issued by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MEE) on Friday, with interested parties given a deadline until June 18, 2020, to participate.

The targeted capacity will be installed on a build-operate-own (BOO) basis and once operational will supply electricity to the Electric Power Generation Enterprise (EPGE), Myanmar's state-owned electricity company. The concession period will be 20 years from the commissioning date of the power plants.

MEE has specified 30 substations and power projects as designated connection points for the projects. Half of the locations are for a maximum allowed project capacity of 30 MW, while 14 projects will be installed with a 30-MW cap. Only one project has a capacity limit of 50 MW.

The government of Myanmar has pledged to connect to the power grid about 55% of the country in 2021 and 75% in 2025-2026. The 100% goal is set for 2030.
