Namibia hopes to break ground on USD-10bn green H2 project in Jan 2025

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Pty) Ltd, which won a preferred bidder status for a USD-10-billion (EUR 9.32bn) green hydrogen hub project in Namibia late last year, is targeting a construction launch in January 2025.

As previously reported, Hyphen has been chosen to develop a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen production hub on 4,000 square kilometres of land within the Tsau //Khaeb National Park. The multi-phase project envisages the addition of 5 GW to 6 GW of renewable energy generation capacity and 3 GW of electrolysers to produce a total of 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually at full scale. The 125,000-tonne-per-year first phase is seen to be realised at the end of 2026.

Since announcing Hyphen’s selection in November 2021, the government of Namibia and the firm have been working to undertake planning and pre-feasibility activities. These will include a master planning process to be developed by the Namibian Ports Authority, also known as Namport, and its strategic partner -- the Port of Rotterdam. The master plan will focus on how Namport will best accommodate the green hydrogen industry in southern Namibia in the future. It is expected to commence shortly and is proposed to be undertaken by international port consultancy PRDW, while Hyphen is to provide technical input.

A full feasibility study for the Hyphen project will be initiated once an implementation agreement is signed.

“For us the time for planning is over and it’s now time to implement. We now have a clear shot at being a front runner as a continental green hydrogen production hub,” stated Tom Alweendo, Minister for Mines and Energy of Namibia.

The government pointed out that the total project investment of USD 10 billion is roughly equal to Namibia’s annual GDP.
