The offshore substation for the 714-MW East Anglia One offshore wind project in the UK has been handed over by its manufacturer, Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, to the project's developer, ScottishPower Renewables, part of Spain's Iberdrola (BME:IBE).

Announcing the handover on Wednesday, ScottishPower Renewables said the the substation will start its journey to the wind farm's site over the next few weeks ahead of installation. The structure, named Andalucia II and described by Navantia as the largest alternating current (AC) offshore substation ever built, will convert energy generated by the 102 turbines from 66 kV to 222 kV. When transmitted onshore, the power will be further converted to 400 kV. The substation will be installed at the end of August or the beginning of September, Navantia said.

In addition to the GBP-2.5-billion (USD 3.3m/EUR 2.8m) East Anglia One project, Iberdrola has two wind farms in operation -- West of Duddon Sands in the Irish Sea and Wikinger in the Baltic Sea -- and a pipeline of over 7.2 GW in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, French waters and the northeastern US coast. East Anglia One should be fully operational in 2020.
