Spanish companies Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables have, as partners, secured a contract to manufacture and supply 21 monopolies for the 315-MW Windanker offshore wind project that compatriot Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) will build in the German Baltic Sea.

Navantia Seanergies, which is the green energy division of Spain’s state-owned shipbuilder, and wind turbine towers specialist Windar will manufacture the order at their EUR-36-million (USD 39.4m) monopile factory in Fene, northwestern Spain.

Announcing the new contract on Tuesday, Navantia said that the manufacturing process is expected to involve 420,000 hours over ten months and create around 210 jobs. Each monopile will measure 84 metres in length, have a diameter of 10 metres, and weigh 2,100 tonnes.

These monopiles will support 21 units of the 15-MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbines.

Windar has a separate contract with Iberdrola to manufacture 21 transition pieces for Windanker. Its partnership with Navantia Seanergies has so far landed contracts worth more than EUR 1 billion from Iberdrola, securing component orders for the Spanish utility’s offshore wind projects in the UK, Germany, France and the US, the shipbuilder said.

Iberdrola plans to fully commission Windanker in 2026.
