Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, a division of Norwegian hydrogen specialist Nel ASA (OSE:NEL), is in line to supply a 20-MW electrolyser solution for a green fertiliser project in Spain.

The company was chosen as the preferred electrolyser supplier by Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE), which is developing the project for fertiliser producer Fertiberia.

The hydrogen production system will be located at Fertiberia’s ammonia plant in the town of Puertollano and will consist of a 100-MW photovoltaic (PV) park, 20 MWh of storage in lithium-ion batteries and the 20-MW electrolyser.

Nel was selected to supply an electrolyser from its proton exchange membrane (PEM) platform. The Norwegian company said that the contract award will depend of mutual agreement over terms and conditions, technical details and board approval.

The Puertollano hydrogen plant is due to start operations in 2021.

Iberdrola and Fertiberia recently announced an initiative to go beyond the Puertollano project and install 800 MW of electrolysers by 2027. These green hydrogen projects would also be developed for Fertiberia’s plants in Spain.
