Neoen SA (EPA:NEOEN) has been granted electricity generation license for the operation of its 200-MW/400-MWh Blyth battery storage project in South Australia, making a step closer to the facility’s commissioning.

The approval of the company’s application was issued by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), according to its website.

The Blyth battery is located about 7 km west of the township of Blyth, with its construction happening simultaneously with the Goyder wind project. Financial close on the energy storage scheme and the 203-MW second tranche of the Goyder South Stage 1 project was achieved in February. Both of them are due to go online by mid-2025.

Goyder South Stage 1 and Blyth are located in the Mid-North region of South Australia. The battery will firm the production capacity of the wind farm. The two facilities will deliver a 70-MW renewable-energy baseload supply to mining group BHP, covering half of the energy needed to power its Olympic Dam mine. Supplies are scheduled to commence in July 2025.
