France’s Neoen SA (EPA:NEOEN) has officially cut the ribbon at its first solar photovoltaic (PV) park in Canada, a 93-MWp plant in Alberta province, and is preparing for its full commissioning in the coming weeks.

The Paris-based renewable energy company said on Thursday that the PV farm was first energised last December and since than its output has been progressively increasing.

Located in Starland County, the Fox Coulee solar farm is expected to produce about 100 GWh of power annually, with the output estimated to be enough to supply around 20,000 homes. A significant portion of the generated electricity, along with the associated environmental benefits, are planned to be sold under power purchase agreements (PPAs), while the rest will be sold on Alberta's deregulated electricity market.

The PV park’s operation will support Alberta’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. Commenting on the Canadian market, the French firm’s province leader in Alberta, Ryan Dick, said: “We have high ambitions in Alberta and are currently developing many other solar, wind and battery projects to accelerate the energy transition.”

Neoen, which has ambitions to become a leading green energy player in Canada, currently has a 400-MW/1,600-MWh energy storage project in Ontario its secured Canadian portfolio.
