Neol gets patent for microorganism producing oil for biofuels

Jan 22, 2014 - Spanish biotechnology firm Neol said it had patented a microorganism, Neoleum, which is able to produce oils used in biofuel production from organic waste.

The microorganism is part of Neol's MicroBiOil platform, which produces bio-oils for industrial use, the company said in a statement.

Neoleum is cultivated in a bioreactor for a year and produces the same amount of oil as one hectare of oil palm annually, Neol said.

The obtained oils are highly versatile and are an ideal raw material for the production of biofuels such as biodiesel and biokerosene as well as other liquids with industrial application such as biolubricants and surfactants, the company added.

Neol, based in the healthcare technology park in Granada, was launched in 2012 as a joint venture of Repsol Energy Ventures and the bioindustrial division of Neuron Bio.
