Nepal to lure Indian power firms with hydropower licences - report

Feb 17, 2012 - Nepal plans to issue hydropower project licences to foreign independent power producers (IPPs) and expects to attract many Indian companies, The Times of India said today, citing a government official.

The Himalayan country seeks to bolster hydroelectric generation to 10 GW in a decade from 1 GW at present, the newspaper cited D B Singh, head of electricity development of Nepal, as saying. According to him, Nepal can produce 20 GW to 25 GW of hydropower in 20 to 25 years.

Singh has also said that China and Brazil have expressed interest in developing hydroelectric projects in Nepal.

At present, Indian IPPs own 6 GW of hydropower licences in Nepal.
