Planning regulators in the Australian state of New South Wales have granted development approval to a 100-MW solar park project with a battery storage component of 45 MW/90 MWh.

The green light was given by the state Independent Planning Commission, according to an official filing. The consent is subject to conditions related to the use of vegetation for visual screening, road and intersection upgrades, as well as the preparation of a decommissioning and rehabilitation plan.

The Wallaroo solar farm is set to be installed in the Yass Valley local government area, near New South Wales border with the Australian Capital Territory. Once in operation, its 182,000 panels are expected to produce electricity for about 40,000 homes.

The project will be reaslised at an investment of some AUD 166 million (USD 111.3m/EUR 100.4m). In its decision, the Planning Commission concluded that the scheme “will contribute to the state and national energy transition, reducing emissions currently generated by other modes of electricity generation.”

Construction works on the project is expected to take 18 months.
