New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday announced a USD-16-million (EUR 14.7m) funding initiative to support research and development (R&D) for clean hydrogen projects.

The financing will seek to support R&D and demonstration projects that promote the use of clean hydrogen in industrial processes, clean transportation, energy storage and for grid support.

The state funding will be distributed under two competitive rounds. The larger one, to be held under the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA’s) Hydrogen and Clean Fuel Programme, will make available USD 11 million for R&D projects. An additional USD 5 million will be allocated as cost-sharing support to entities applying for federal hydrogen funding for New York-based projects.

Proponents can either take part solo or as part of consortia in both rounds. They will be able to submit their proposals in two categories, one that focuses on innovations and technologies that are still not commercially available and another one for pilot and demonstration schemes.

Winners in the NYSERDA round will be selected in the third quarter, with applications to be accepted by July 15, 2024. Proposals in the cost-share category will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until June 26, 2025.

"As we continue to foster the green economy, advancing alternative fuels is an important way to reduce emissions economy-wide and create new clean energy job opportunities,” Governor Hochul said.
