New Zealand to finance 1-MW solar project in Afghanistan - report

Aug 2, 2012 - New Zealand's government will provide NZD 18.6 million (USD 15.1m/EUR 12.3m) in financing for the construction of a 1.05-MW solar plant in Afghanistan, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported today citing New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully.

The solar system, which will be located in the province of Bayman, will produce enough power to supply some 2,500 households, businesses and public buildings a year, according to McCully.

New Zealand-based companies NetCon Ltd and Sustainable Energy Services International have been contracted to build the solar system, which is expected to be completed at the end of 2013.

The New Zealand troops have been providing assistance in reconstruction in the Bayman province since 2003, McCully added.
