French cable manufacturer Nexans SA (EPA:NEX) has officially opened the newly-expanded section of its high-voltage subsea cable plant in Halden, Norway, the company announced on Thursday.

Originally built in 1974, the Halden facility now includes a 34,000-sq-m site that more than doubles the capacity of the plant for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) extruded cables.

In addition, it features a 152.89-metre tall second extrusion tower enabling the plant to insulate four cables simultaneously in addition to the two existing lines. Nexans noted that the second tower will be focused on the production of HVDC cables for offshore wind farms, but will still have the capability to serve High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) applications.

“Our investment in Halden significantly increases our production capacity and illustrates Nexans’ commitment to sustainability and the global energy transition. The plant will supply international markets with cables for key offshore wind farms and interconnectors that will bring renewable energy from the areas of high supply to those of high demand,” said Christopher Guerin, CEO of Nexans.
