French cable manufacturer Nexans SA (EPA:NEX) has decided to spend EUR 15 million (USD 16.6m) to expand the medium-voltage cable production capacity of an existing plant in east-central France with two new production lines and an overall upgrade of the entire manufacturing flow.

The move comes to meet the growing demand in the energy sector and is aimed at supporting distribution grid operators and installers, and supplying renewable energy projects, including solar and wind farms, in France and in Western Europe, Nexans said in a press statement today.

The funds will be allocated to Nexans’ facility in Bourg-en-Bresse in the region of Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes from 2024 to 2026.

The project envisages the installation of a new stranding machine that can produce new, larger aluminium cable sections, including 400-square-milimiters ones. In addition, there will be a new cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) triple extruder. The new equipment is expected be up and running in the first half of 2026.

Furthermore, the French firm plans to modernise part of its industrial capacity, in particular the sheathing and assembly lines. The upgrades will strengthen the production of the company’s EDRMAX reinforced direct-buried cables.
