Indian hydropower producer NHPC Ltd (BOM:533098) has sealed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) to develop pilot green hydrogen production projects at two locations in the country’s Ladakh union territory region.

In District Leh, NHPC intends to produce green hydrogen and install a green hydrogen fuel cell-based microgrid to meet the power requirements of its own housing facility at the site of the Nimmo Bazgo Power Station run-of-river power complex.

The second pact will see the Indian firm produce green hydrogen in the district of Kargil so as to power fuel cells used for mobility purposes. According to its estimates, the output will be able to power two buses for up to eight hours.

NHPC noted that the demo schemes are set to create a roadmap for the future development of green hydrogen projects that can help decarbonise the transportation sector. The power producer will aim to start producing green hydrogen on a commercial scale and supply it for use in mobility, transportation, heating and microgrid applications.

In April, NHPC signed a MoU to produce green hydrogen in the state of Himachal Pradesh for the needs of the local mobility and transportation markets.
