Nicaragua's Ingenio Montelimar inaugurated on Thursday a 38-MW biomass plant in San Rafael del Sur city, local media reported.

Named Green Power, the plant will use sugarcane bagasse as raw material. The USD-76-million (EUR 66.4m) facility will be able to meet 5% of the country's electricity demand.

The minister of Mines and Energy, Salvador Mansell, quoted by the local media, said during the inauguration that with this plant, Nicaragua has now an installed capacity of 1,329 MW.

Earlier this month, the Nicaraguan government announced it will invest more than USD 10 million in renewable energy projects this year. Also in April the South Korean government said it will extend a USD-33.3-million loan to Nicaragua for a solar energy project concerning 164 rural communities.
