Jan 5, 2015 - Nicaragua's renewable energy plants generated record-high 83% of power output in the first day of 2015, local news site Energia Limpia XXI reported, based on data of market administrator CNDC.

Wind power represented 34.1% of total generation, followed by geothermal energy, biomass and hydropower, with 21.9%, 14.7% and 12.2%, respectively, the data showed.

Nicaragua has the largest wind energy potential among the Central American countries, mainly in its southern department of Rivas, according to a study of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Energy minister Emilio Rappaccioli has said that the country plans to install 770 MW of renewable energy plants in the next 15 years, including 300 MW of wind and 270 MW of hydro power, with public and private investment.
