Nicaragua's renewables output reaches 52.4% in 2014

Jan 7, 2015 - Nicaragua increased the share of renewable energy in its electricity output to 52.44% on average last year versus 51% in 2013, energy minister Emilio Rappaccioli told local media on Monday.

Wind energy came to represent 20.72% of total output, while geothermal, hydroelectric and biomass plants produced 15.25%, 9.66% and 6.81%, respectively.

The country wants to achieve 54% in 2015 and then boost renewable energy to 64% in 2016 and 86% in 2020, Rappaccioli said. The growth of the sector will include the 253-MW Tumarin hydroelectric plant, scheduled for 2019-2020.

The government has unveiled plans to expand renewable energy generation between 2014 and 2028 through 300 MW of wind, 270 MW of hydro, 100 MW of geothermal and 100 MW of solar plants. The projects will involve public and private investments.
