Nordex lands breakthrough order for 100-MW wind farm in S Africa

Nov 9, 2012 - German wind turbine maker Nordex SE (ETR:NDX1) said today it would deliver and install turbines at the 100-MW Dorper wind farm for South African power plant operator Dorper Wind Farm Pty Ltd, thus entering the country.

According to the announcement, Dorper Wind Farm Pty Ltd is a project company led by the local subsidiaries of Japanese Sumitomo Corp (TYO:8316) and South African Rainmaker Energy.

Construction will begin later this month and the installation of the 40 units of N100/2500 turbines is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2013. The order also includes a service contract for at least 10 years. No financial details were available.

The new wind farm will be located north-west of Queenstown, in the Eastern Cape. It is one of the first renewable energy projects, given a 20-year power purchase agreement by the Department of Energy of South Africa in 2011.

Nordex will work with local partners in order to set up a permanent service station. Furthermore, it has recently established a subsidiary in Cape Town.
