German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex SE (ETR:NDX1) announced on Thursday it will restart production in its manufacturing facility in Iowa, US, as part of its growth strategy in North America to take advantage of expected growth in the US and Canadian market.

The company will produce nacelles for the current N163 turbine model, as well as a product tailored to the US market.

“Following the suspension of nacelle production, we kept the Iowa manufacturing facility ready to resume operations. It will primarily produce components for projects in the US and Canada,” said Nordex chief operations officer Alberto Fernandez.

The factory is located in West Branch, Iowa and once belonged to Acciona Windpower that Nordex acquired in 2016.

Recruitment will commence in the second half of 2024 and production start-up is planned for the first half of 2025. Production capacities will be ramped-up in line with order volume development, with annual capacity intended to exceed 2.5 GW, explained Manav Sharma, CEO of Division North America.

The manufacturer will build on the local supply chain already in place to meet domestic content requirements, Sharma also said.

Sharma was recently appointed to spearhead the expansion of Nordex’ business in the US.

“Manufacturing nacelles in the US represents a significant next step in expanding local procurement, and our manufacturing presence in North America, which is a key element of the company’s growth strategy for the region,” said Nordex CEO Jose Luis Blanco.
