Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia province will provide EUR 20 million (USD 21.86m) to support the development of a network of hydrogen refuelling stations for heavy commercial vehicles.

The funding call was announced by the state's economy ministry on Monday and concerns the construction of publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling stations for heavy commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses, refuse collection vehicles and other special vehicles.

The funding programme will cover up to 70% of the eligible investment costs for hydrogen refuelling stations.

The aim is to expand the hydrogen infrastructure in the state to 200 public hydrogen filling stations for heavy commercial vehicles by the end of this decade from currently five stations.

Funding applications will be accepted by the district government of Arnsberg until September 30, 2023.

"Hydrogen-powered trucks can be refuelled quickly and have a long range, making them an attractive alternative for companies looking to transition their fleet to eco-friendly propulsion. By supporting hydrogen refuelling stations, the state is creating the conditions for greater climate protection in mobility," said North Rhine-Westphalia's economy minister Mona Neubaur.
