Northern Power Systems unveils 2.3 MW direct drive wind turbine

(ADpnews) - May 24, 2011 - US direct-drive wind turbine maker Northern Power Systems Inc has announced "a strong commercial momentum" for its new 2.3 MW wind turbine, dubbed NPS 2.3.

After successfully completed six-month extensive dynamometer testing, the new direct-drive turbine was introduced yesterday at the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) WindPower 2011 conference.

The NPS 2.3 is the largest permanent-magnet/direct drive (PM/DD) wind turbine in commercial operation in North America today, according to the company. Its initial prototype turbine has been operating in Michigan since January 2011.

At present, Northern Power Systems Inc is in talks with numerous customers for additional NPS 2.3 orders and has recently received the second order, scheduled to be carried out in summer 2011.

Besides its new NPS 2.3, the company also unveiled a 100-meter (328-foot) rotor to optimise energy capture at low-wind sites. The product is expected to float out on the market in 2012.
