GreenIron has signed a contract to procure green hydrogen from Norwegian Hydrogen to be used as a reducing agent at its fossil-free metal production plant in Sweden.

Deliveries to GreenIron’s site in Sandviken will start shortly. The volumes will be sourced from Norwegian Hydrogen’s recently opened first production plant in Norway, the companies said in a joint statement on Monday.

“As GreenIron scales up production during 2025, the contracted hydrogen volumes will quickly ramp up to levels which require that we bring additional and dedicated hydrogen production capacity on stream,” said Simen Skaare Eriksen, CCO of Norwegian Hydrogen.

Norwegian Hydrogen announced the successful completion of the first deliveries of green hydrogen from its production site in Hellesylt, Norway at the end of June. The site with a daily production capacity of up to 1.3 tonnes already supplies hydrogen to its first customer -- Norwegian construction and civil engineering company Veidekke which uses the clean fuel in the production of asphalt.

“Collaboration with Norwegian Hydrogen secures our supply chain as we begin commercial production and prepare for scaling up volumes and expansion,” said GreenIron’s COO Ulrika Molander.

GreenIron is set to start this year its first full-scale production facility in the Sandviken Industrial Park, located around 160 kilometres (99 mi) north of Stockholm.
