Norwegian Hydrogen AS’ refuelling subsidiary Vireon AS has secured a EUR-9.2-million (USD 9.87m) EU grant to support the building of a green hydrogen production plant and associated refuelling network for heavy-duty vehicles across Finland and Denmark.

The initiative entails the deployment of a 5-MW electrolyser and the construction of seven refuelling stations, four in Finland and three in Denmark. Various original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have already confirmed that they will deliver hydrogen trucks from 2025 onwards, according to a statement released today.

The new funds were secured as part of a EUR-424-million package announced by the EU earlier this week to support 42 projects for alternative fuels supply infrastructure.

Vireon’s EU grant comes as the second for Norwegian Hydrogen in a short time. It follows a EUR-9-million award from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership earlier this year for developing an integrated green hydrogen value chain at the Port of Hirtshals in Denmark.

Norwegian Hydrogen set up Vireon in March 2023 in a drive to create the largest operator of hydrogen refuelling stations for heavy transport in the Nordics.
