Scottish tidal turbine developer Nova Innovation has teamed up with UK environmental, engineering and technical services company RSK Group to provide floating solar globally.

The companies have set up a joint venture (JV), called AquaGen365, they announced last week.

The step follows Nova’s first floating solar demonstration project in the Port of Leith in Edinburgh. The demonstrator, an example of near-shore sea use of floating solar, is powering Forth Ports’ headquarters.

The companies said that the joint venture combines RSK’s footprint across over 200 environmental, engineering and technical service companies in 40 countries, with the marine energy expertise of Nova Innovation.

“Floating solar provides clean, predictable, low-cost energy, using reliable and bankable technology that offers an alternative solution to ground-mounted and rooftop solar,” said RSK director David Taylor.

“Floating solar will benefit many sectors, in particular, enabling sustainable irrigation in the agricultural sector, helping to achieve carbon net zero targets within the water industry, the provision of renewable energy to power industrial sites and complexes, and driving the push for ’greener’ ports and harbours,” Taylor commented further.

Nova Innovation CEO Simon Forrest said that the main advantage of floating is that it can be installed quickly at scale, especially in areas where land is scarce or expensive.
