Nova secures EU funding for 4-MW tidal energy project in Orkney

A consortium led by Scottish tidal stream energy company Nova Innovation has won EUR 20 million (USD 22m) of EU funding to install a 4-MW tidal energy farm, it was announced today.

The project is aimed at kickstarting mass manufacturing of tidal turbines at Nova’s headquarters in Edinburgh and helping to unlock tides’ potential as a source of predictable clean energy.

The 16-turbine tidal energy array will be deployed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland. The SEASTAR project, funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe programme, builds on Nova’s Shetland Tidal Array which has been generating power for homes, businesses and the Shetland grid since 2016, the company pointed out.

The SEASTAR consortium includes EMEC, Ocean Energy Europe, Leask Marine, Wood Group, SKF, DLA Piper, Renewable Risk Advisers, Primo Marine, Wave Venture and Nature Positive.

“Nova’s project at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney will accelerate the development of a new industry and helps to show how Scottish ingenuity is helping us to capture the immense potential of renewable energy from our seas and oceans,” stated Humza Yousaf, First Minister of Scotland.
