Aluminium products maker Novelis Inc has received final clearance for the construction of a 28,000-sq-m solar park in Italy to decarbonise its activities in the commune of Pieve Emanuele, Lombardy region.

The subsidiary of India’s Hindalco Industries Ltd (BOM:500440) said last week it is investing USD 2.4 million (EUR 2.2m) in the decarbonisation of its existing plant in Pieve, which has a large unoccupied area with high sun exposure.

The grid-connected solar power plant will have the capacity to produce some 4,000 MWh of electricity per year and thus cover about 12% of the site’s demand. Its completion is expected by the end of 2023.

Novelis wants to cut its carbon footprint by 30% by 2026 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 at the latest.
