Danish renewables developer European Energy A/S will provide e-methanol to two fellow-Danish companies, Novo Nordisk (CPH:NOVO-B) and the LEGO Group, to help them replace some fossil-based plastic.

The e-methanol will be produced from renewable energy and biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) and then used to produce plastic. Under the agreement, European Energy will deliver e-methanol for part of Novo Nordisk and the LEGO Group’s materials production from 2024.

The healthcare company wants to replace fossil-based plastic with lower-carbon sources for use in medical devices such as insulin pens. The toy company will look into using e-methanol to produce specific elements in its portfolio. It expects to develop prototypes in the coming years that could be commercialised in the longer term.

“The project will give us our third sustainable material we’ve developed alongside bio-PE and prototype bricks made from recycled PET,” said Nelleke van der Puil, vice president of materials at the LEGO Group.
