NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), the green energy business of Indian state-run power producer NTPC Ltd (BOM:532555), will develop renewables energy projects for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) announced on Wednesday by India’s Ministry of Power.

The agreement, signed by the companies in New Delhi on Tuesday, envisages supplying 400 MW of round-the-clock renewable power to cater to the needs of the oil and gas refiner.

According to the announcement, the MoU marks the start of a partnership on developing renewable energy projects to help HPCL meet its clean energy commitments.

Separately, NTPC on Wednesday said it has commissioned India's first green hydrogen blending project in the piped natural gas network of NTPC Kawas township, Surat, in the Indian state of Gujarat. Blended fuel will be supplied to households of the township, with the green hydrogen being generated by electrolysis powered by a 1-MW floating solar project.

The regulator, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), has approved the blending of 5% green hydrogen with the piped natural gas, the company explained. The blending level is planned to be scaled to 20%.

The project is a collaboration with Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL). It was set in motion by the Indian prime minister in July 2022.
