Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP Renewables (ELI:EDPR) and Engie SA (EPA:ENGI), and Martifer Renewables & Energy have decided to participate with a joint floating wind bid in Portugal's first offshore wind tender.

The companies have entered into a strategic partnership to combine Ocean Winds’s expertise in offshore wind farm development and Martifer’s industrial capabilities and knowledge of the local market for the auction set to take place later in 2024, a press statement said on Wednesday.

The two partners are already preparing comprehensive proposals, including with major national suppliers and infrastructures ahead of the announcement of the final criteria for the competition.

At the end of October, the Portuguese government launched the initial stage of the competitive procedure for the development of up to 3.5 GW of offshore wind power generation in three areas off the Atlantic coast.

Ocean Winds is already present in the Portuguese offshore wind market through the 25-MW WindFloat Atlantic floating offshore wind farm which the company operates from its base in the port of Viana do Castelo.
