Octopus Energy is set to make its first move into renewables in Africa after its generation arm has been selected for a project that will see the construction of the first wind park in Sierra Leone.

The project will be realised under a partnership agreement with Sherbro Alliance Partners (SAP), a development company of actor Idris Elba and former Sierra Leone president’s grandson Siaka Stevens.

The overall project envisages the installation of up to five wind turbines, solar panels and battery energy storage systems (BESS) to generate clean electricity for local communities. Constriction works are scheduled to start in 2024.

The partners are considering options for the location of the site on the Sherbro Island, a semi-autonomous special economic zone that SAP has committed to turning into an economic hub and dynamic eco-city.

As part of the partnership agreement, which was sealed on the first day of the COP28 summit in Dubai, SAP and Octopus have decided to open offices in Sierra Leone.
