Australian energy retailer SmartestEnergy said on Tuesday committed to procuring power from 25% of the 333-MW DC Darlington Point solar farm’s output under a long-term deal with Octopus Australia.

Located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, the photovoltaic (PV) park was commissioned in 2020 and is currently the largest solar complex operating in Australia. Its roughly one million solar panels are generating enough electricity to cover the demand of around 110,000 homes annually.

The duration of SmartestEnergy’s power purchase agreement (PPA) was not disclosed. The power retailer will use the electricity to offer commercial and industrial companies renewable energy and thus help them in their sustainability efforts.

Darlington Point has in place a power off-take deal with Delta Electricity for electricity from 150 MW of its capacity.

Developed by Australia’s Edify Energy, the solar complex was the first acquisition of UK-based Octopus Investments’ Aussie arm through its AUD-10-billion (USD 6.57bn/EUR 6.96bn) renewable energy platform launched in the summer of 2022.
