Polish utility PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA (WSE:PGE) and Denmark’s Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) have contracted suppliers for the offshore substations for their 1.5-GW Baltica 2 offshore wind project in Poland.

The partners have awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for four 375-MW substations to a consortium of Denmark’s Semco Maritime and Vietnam’s PTSC Mechanical & Construction (PTSC M&C), it was announced on Tuesday. The consortium is supported by sub-contractors ISC Consulting Engineers and Hyundai Electric.

“The signing the contract for offshore power stations is an important milestone for the project which brings us closer to delivering Poland’s largest-ever renewable energy project – an offshore wind farm that will produce enough green energy to cover the power consumption of approximately 2.4 million Polish households,” commented Agata Staniewska-Bolesta, managing director of Ørsted Offshore Poland.

Located some 40 kilometres (about 25 miles) off the Polish coast, Baltica 2 is due to be commissioned by the end of 2027. PGE and Ørsted then expect to bring the 1-GW Baltica 3 live by the end of 2029.

The newly awarded contract will be executed in 2023-2026. The substations will be manufactured at PTSC M&C’s yard in the Vietnamese port city of Vungtau.
