There is a growing opportunity for offshore wind developers with 135 GW of potential capacity available in leasing rounds, London-based market research Westwood Global Energy Group said today.

This is almost 2.5 times the world’s current installed offshore wind capacity of 55 GW.

According to the firm’s analysis, the offshore wind leasing pipeline is boosted by new market expansion as over 20 GW of leases are on offer in countries with no leasing rounds so far, such as Canada, Colombia and India.

“This growth will present huge opportunities and challenges to the sector – both for the supply chain delivering existing projects and the developers exploring new opportunities,” commented Peter Lloyd-Williams, senior analyst, offshore wind at Westwood.

The firm also announced upgrades to its WindLogix market intelligence tool, including following more than 70 ongoing and planned offshore wind leasing processes. Other improvements include coverage of offshore wind power purchase agreements (PPAs).
