Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) has won a contract to build the 500-MW Manah I solar power plant in northern Oman and plans to break the ground on the project in the second half of 2023.

The contract was awarded by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), the sole off-taker of electricity from independent power plants in the Sultanate.

The project is one of two solar plants each with a capacity of 500 MW that will be set up in the northern Ad Dakhiliyah governorate about 170 km (105.6 mi) southwest of the capital Muscat.

Manah I will require investments of KRW 600 billion (USD 460m/EUR 427m), KOWEPO said in a statement on Tuesday.

Construction work is expected to begin in the second half of this year with commissioning planned to take place by March 2025.

The contract includes an offtake agreement with OPWP for a period of 20 years.

Earlier this month, the Manah II project was awarded to a joint venture of Sembcorp Industries and Jinko Power Technology (SHA:601778). This solar plant is expected to start feeding electricity into the grid also by 2025.
