Oman prepares to develop hydrogen transport infrastructure

OQ Gas Networks (OQGN), the sole operator of the gas transportation system in Oman, has joined forces with Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) to explore the development of a green hydrogen network infrastructure in the Sultanate.

The collaboration aims to create an efficient and cost-effective solution for green hydrogen transportation, OQGN said today.

By leveraging OQGN's expertise, the partnership seeks to establish shared infrastructure plans that enable green hydrogen developers to benefit from technical and economic synergies. OQGN is expected play a pivotal role in the development and construction of a green hydrogen pipeline network, facilitating the transportation of green hydrogen from Hydrom's renewable and clean hydrogen blocks to downstream plants at special economic zones and ports.

The network will also connect various governorates and explore potential interconnections with neighbouring countries.

Firas Ali Al-Abduwani, Acting Managing Director at Hydrom, emphasised the importance of reliable infrastructure to fully harness Oman's significant potential for green hydrogen. "We are confident there are many other similar opportunities that we are hoping to explore with other national and international infrastructure providers, which will benefit the green hydrogen developers by providing a reliable cornerstone, supporting Hydrom’s vision of creating a green hydrogen hub in The Sultanate of Oman," Al-Abduwani added.

Owned by Energy Development Oman (EDO) and regulated by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Hydrom was established in 2022 to oversee the national interest in the development of the green hydrogen industry in Oman, including the allocation of lands for green hydrogen projects and the planning of hydrogen networks.

Last week, Hydrom inked deals for the development of three projects for green hydrogen production in the Duqm area in the first round of a tender aimed at supporting the country's goal to produce more than 1 million tonnes by the end of the decade.
