The rollout of onshore wind energy in Germany stagnated in the first half of the year when 238 turbines with a combined capacity of 977 MW were installed across the country.

Thus, new onshore wind additions fell 0.2% in the first six months of the year as compared with a year earlier, the German mechanical engineering industry association VDMA said on Thursday.

The approval of new projects also stagnated during the period under review as permits were issued for only 306 wind turbines with a total capacity of 1,536 MW.

Details about the deployment of onshore wind capacity in Germany in the first half of 2022 are available in the table below.

H1 2022 Capacity Number of wind turbines
Gross additions 977 MW 238
-- of which repowering 133 MW 35
Decommissioned turbines 99 MW 82
Net capacity deployed 878 MW 156
Cumulative onshore wind capacity 56,848 MW 28,287

The key obstacles to the expansion of onshore wind energy in Germany remain the lack of areas available for turbines, the lengthy approval process, and supply chain disruptions.

The forecast for the full year was slightly increased and the new onshore wind additions are now seen in the range of 2.4 GW to 3 GW, up from 2.3 GW - 2.7 GW projected in January.

Currently, onshore wind projects with a total capacity of around 10,000 MW are in the approval process, around 2,250 MW of which are from the first half of 2022.
