Japanese diversified group ORIX Corporation (TYO:8591) announced today it will build a 134-MW/548-MWh power grid energy storage plant in Maibara, Shiga Prefecture.

The Maibara-Koto Energy Storage Plant, as it is named, will be located in an area of approximately 26,000 sq m (279,861.67 sq ft). The project was secured in a long-term decarbonisation energy auction and has a guaranteed fixed income in principle of 20 years.

With 140 containers of lithium-ion storage batteries, the plant can meet the daily usage of some 48,000 average households when one charging and discharging cycle is performed. The facility will also have a multi-purpose square with exhibits about the environment to educate the public.

ORIX said construction is set to commence in November 2024, with the power operations scheduled to begin in 2027.
