Polish oil refiner Orlen Group has signed a preliminary deal with the Polish arm of EDP Renewables to acquire a portfolio of wind and solar parks at home with a combined capacity of over 300 MWp.

The transaction is worth roughly PLN 1.15 billion (USD 289.8m/EUR 268m) and is seen to boost the Polish group’s renewable generation capacity by almost 30%, it said on Friday.

Specifically, Orlen Wind 3 will buy from EDP Renewables Polska two solar photovoltaic (PV) parks totalling 280 MWp in the provinces of Zielona Gora and Poznan, as well as the 26-MW Warta wind farm with 13 turbines in Lodz province. The smaller PV plant, of 40 MWp in size, was brought online in January. The second one, installed at a former lignite mine, currently operates at 200 MWp and is due to be expanded with an additional 40 MWp by the end of this year.

“Our goal is to be a key player in Central and Eastern Europe’s energy transition,” said Orlen’s CEO and president of the management board Ireneusz Fafara. He noted that the deal makes “strong economic sense” for the company and is part of its plan to expand its green energy business. “That’s why we’re not stopping here, actively looking for further attractive projects on the renewable energy market to seize every business opportunity that comes our way,” he added.

Orlen aims to reach 9 GW of installed renewables capacity by end-2030.
