The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub, one of the seven US clean hydrogen hubs that were selected for USD 7 billion (EUR 6.4bn) in federal funding, has become one of the first to move into Phase 1.

The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWH2), a multi-state nonprofit organisation, said last week that the project has been granted Phase 1 award status by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and will receive up to USD 27.5 million for initial planning, permitting and analysis activities. This is the initial portion from a potential USD 1 billion in federal funding.

The PNWH2 hub is planned to include eight nodes across Washington, Oregon and Montana. It aims to use the region’s renewable energy resources to produce green hydrogen for hard-to-abate end-users, such as agricultural products, transport and the electric power industry.

“Congratulations to the PNWH2 on officially launching into phase one of our exciting partnership with DOE to develop the hydrogen market in the Pacific Northwest,” stated Washington governor Jay Inslee.
