US paints and coatings manufacturer PPG Industries Inc (NYSE:PPG) has agreed to buy renewable energy certificates (RECs) for 126,000 MWh sourced from a wind facility in Crockett County, Texas.

The REC deal was signed with US integrated energy and services provider NRG Energy Inc’s (NYSE:NRG) brand Direct Energy, a statement said on Monday.

With the agreement, four PPG paints and coatings manufacturing facilities and 62 stores in Texas are expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 9,400 metric tons annually.

“PPG has a strong history of focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy sourcing, which has resulted in a 17% reduction in absolute GHG emissions since 2017,” said Diane Kappas, vice president for global sustainability at PPG.

The US paints supplier last year entered into a 1.5-MW power purchase agreement (PPA) for its facility in Adrian, Michigan with energy firm Constellation. Back in 2021, it also inked a 10-year contract for Constellation to supply renewable power to its Carrollton, Texas-based paint manufacturing site.
