Panasonic completes 5-MW PV plant in Costa Rica

Japan’s Panasonic Corp (TYO:6752) has completed a 5-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant in Costa Rica.

The facility is comprised of 15,456 HIT (heterojunction with intrinsic thin-layer) solar panels, making it the largest of its kind in Latin America, the company said on Friday.

Located in the northern Pacific province of Guanacaste, the PV plant output will be distributed to local communities through electrification cooperative Coopeguanacaste RL.

With an estimated electricity generation of 9 GWh per year, the plant should also be able to offset about 1,500 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.

The PV farm is the result of a bilateral agreement between the government of Japan and Costa Rica, called Joint Crediting Mechanis (JCM). This programme focuses on the promotion of the fight against climate change by the use of green technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Panasonic noted.
