US-based hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) technology developer Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ:PLUG) plans to open a new multi-purpose facility in Germany to serve as its European headquarters.

The 70,000-square-foot (6,503 sq m) site will be located in North Rhine-Westphalia and will accommodate an innovation centre with engineering labs and technical support, as well as a monitoring, diagnostics and technical support centre. Furthermore, the facility will house a green hydrogen generator with an electrolyser infrastructure on site, a shipping, inventor and logistics centre and space for training.

The European headquarters are expected to open in early 2022 with about 30 employees. The headcount is seen to double by the middle of that year.

“The expansion to Europe comes as Plug faces a growing customer base abroad with the burgeoning interest in green hydrogen energy,” said Andy Marsh, Plug Power’s CEO.

The company will use the new site to serve both new and existing customers. To date, Plug Power has installed several PEM electrolysers in Germany, France, The Netherlands, and Portugal, in addition to participating in the hydrogen mobility market in Europe.
