Poland's National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management said last week it will launch on Monday a PLN-1.5-billion (USD 335m/EUR 314m) programme to support developers of biogas plants using municipal bio-waste and sewage sludge.

The goal is to meet the residents' waste management needs while minimising the burden on the environment and the costs associated with it, the fund explained.

The support will cover the construction of new or the modernisation of existing installations for the fermentation of bio-waste and the use of the obtained biogas to generate energy. Investors can apply for co-financing in the form of a grant of up to 50% of the costs or a loan covering the expenses in full.

The renewable heat and electricity obtained from the bio-waste fermentation will ensure the energy autonomy of the waste management plants and reduce their operating costs, pointed out Ireneusz Zyska, deputy minister and government plenipotentiary for renewable energy sources.
