Polish power utility Polenergia SA (WSE:PEP) and Norway's Equinor ASA (OSE:EQNR) are preparing to make the final investment decision (FID) for the Baltyk 2 and Baltyk 3 wind projects in the Baltic Sea, having received the full set of offshore and onshore construction permits.

The local unit of Equinor said on Thursday that the Pomeranian Voivodeship, a province in northwestern Poland, has issued a total of 17 permits for the two projects to date. Thus, it is allowing the installation of 100 wind turbines with internal power and telecommunications networks, two offshore power stations, submarine export cables, two onshore power stations with accompanying infrastructure, both 400-kV and 220-Kv land cable lines with accompanying infrastructure, along with the construction of an access road to the onshore power station.

The first preparatory works on land should commence this year, according to Jerzy Zan, President of the Management Board of Polenergia. In February, the two companies signed a final agreement with Siemens Gamesa for the supply of wind turbines for the projects.

With a combined capacity of 1,440 MW, Baltyk 2 and Baltyk 3 will be built about 22 km-37 km from the coastline in the Polish exclusive economic zone of the Baltic Sea. Both projects were awarded Contracts for Difference (CfDs) by the Polish Energy Regulatory Office in 2021. They are expected to generate first power in 2027 and become fully operational in 2028.

Equinor and Polenergia are also partnering on the development of the up-to-1,560-MW Baltyk 1 project, which is to be built some 81 km from the coast.
