Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) announced on Saturday it has received the latest environmental approval to build a 274-MW wind park in Portugal.

Touted as the largest wind farm in the country, the Tamega Eolico project will be capable of generating enough clean electricity to meet the demand of 128,000 households.

To be located in the town of Vila Real, in Braga, the new facility will form the largest Portuguese hybridisation project by taking advantage of the grid injection point already built at the 1,158-MW Tamega hydroelectric complex, combining the two power sources.

With the Decision of Environmental Conformity of the Execution Project (DCAPE) in hand, Iberdrola now has approval from the Portuguese environmental agency APA for the construction project.

The Spanish energy giant noted that now it will apply for a production licence with the Portuguese Directorate-General for Energy and Geology. Iberdrola plans to commence construction in early 2025.
