Chinese state-owned conglomerate Power Construction Corp of China (Power China) has struck a deal with the government of Iraq to deploy 2 GW of solar power capacity in the Asian country.

The agreement of principles was announced by the Iraqi government in a Twitter post on Wednesday. While no specific details were given about the project, it was announced that its first phase will enable the construction of 750 MW of photovoltaic (PV) parks.

The selected locations of the proposed projects were not specified.

A major oil producer, Iraq aims to boost the share of renewables in power generation by the end of the decade to address supply issues that currently cause daily power outages. It has set a target of producing 20% to 25% of its total power from renewables by 2030, which equals an installed renewable generation capacity of 10 GW-12 GW.

In June, renewable energy company Masdar, part of Abu Dhabi government’s Mubadala Investment Company, signed a heads of agreement with Iraq to develop at least 2 GW of solar projects in Iraq.
