The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) recently announced the inauguration of the 10-MW Kano solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at a ceremony attended by the country’s President Muhammadu Buhari.

The USD-16-million (EUR 15m) solar park is located on a 24-hectare site close to the Challawa Industrial Estate in the Kumbotso Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano. Jointly owned by the federal and state governments as well as the host area, this facility is now the country’s largest solar PV plant connected to the grid.

NSIA undertook the development of the project and nearly two years ago hired a consortium consisting of German sector player Greencells GmbH and local contractor Eauxwell Nigeria Ltd to carry out the construction work.

“NSIA is set to launch a Renewable Energy Platform this year, as it strives to proliferate such renewable energy projects and other solutions across the country as well as demonstrate NSIA’s continued commitment to sustainable development,” the authority’s managing director and CEO, Aminu Umar-Sadiq, said at the time of the inauguration.

Nigeria has pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2060.
